Hackers Manipulate Russian Radio Stations and
TV with Fake Putin Message
In a concerning flip of events, unknown hackers efficaciously infiltrated numerous radio stations in the towns of Rostov, Belgorod, and Voronezh, that are situated close to the Ukrainian border. These audacious hackers managed to play a fabricated message in the voice of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Furthermore, they also targeted certain Russian TV stations, broadcasting manipulated videos featuring a deepfake version of President Putin alongside the same voice message. Samples of these deceptive videos can still be found circulating on various social media platforms.
Promptly responding to the incident, the Russian state-owned news corporation Tass noted Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Kremlin, who labeled the message as fake, deliberately designed to incite panic. Despite these developments, Peskov reassured the public that the situation was under control, downplaying rumors of Ukraine's potential counter-offensive plans.
This recent hacking incident is not the first of its kind to impact Russian radio stations. In February, a couple of stations fell victim to similar attacks, ensuing in big panic throughout areas which includes Volgograd, Stavropol, and Moscow. During these previous incidents, hackers transmitted air raid warnings, causing significant distress among the affected populations.
